General Motors Earnings Preview: What to Expect

With a market cap of $47.8 billion, General Motors Company (GM) is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world. Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, and founded in 1908, GM designs, manufactures, and sells cars, trucks, and automotive parts, and also provides automotive financing services through its subsidiary, General Motors Financial Company.

The automotive manufacturer is expected to release its Q2 2025 earnings before the market opens on Tuesday, July 22. Ahead of this event, analysts expect GM to post adjusted earnings of $2.44 per share, representing a 20.3% decrease from $3.06 per share reported in the same quarter last year. On a more positive note, the company has surpassed the Street's bottom-line estimates in each of the past four quarters.

Analysts expect General Motors to report an adjusted EPS of $9.30 in the current year, down 12.3% from $10.60 reported in fiscal 2024. However, in fiscal 2026, its earnings are expected to improve 2.7% annually to $9.55 per share.

Shares of GM have gained 5.9% over the past 52 weeks, underperforming the S&P 500 Index's ($SPX13.6% uptick and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund’s (XLY19.2% returns during the same time frame.

General Motors shares edged lower on Apr. 29, despite delivering robust Q1 2025 results. The automaker reported revenue of $44 billion, marking a 2.3% year-over-year increase and beating Street estimates of $42.5 billion. Electric vehicle sales soared more than 90% compared to the year-ago quarter, reflecting GM’s accelerating EV momentum. Adjusted EPS came in at $2.78, up 6.1% year-over-year and 3.3% above analyst expectations.

Analysts' consensus view on GM is moderately optimistic, with an overall "Moderate Buy" rating. Among 26 analysts covering the stock, 10 suggest a "Strong Buy," one gives a "Moderate Buy," 12 recommend a "Hold,” and three give a “Strong Sell” rating. Its mean price target of $52.10 represents a 5.9% premium to current price levels.
